About faculty of Biology
The Faculty of Biology was initially established as a department of the Faculty of Science at Kabul University in 1942. The idea to establish the Faculty of Science arose from the need for more teachers due to the increasing number of students in secondary and high schools, as well as the lack of professionals in various fields of natural sciences resulting from industrial development. As a response to these pressing needs, the Faculty of Science was established as the third faculty at Kabul University and was initially named the Faculty of Science, later renamed to the Faculty of Sciences.
The first group of students admitted to the Faculty of Science consisted of 21 students who began their education in the fields of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Professionals from various fields of natural science who were working in ministries or held senior positions in government offices and institutions were invited to teach at the faculty to ensure its successful operation.
Initially, students studied in the fields of Chemistry and Biology, and Mathematics and Physics. In 1348, the academic structure of the faculty changed, leading to a more specific curriculum and the establishment of independent departments for Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics.
During the civil war in Kabul, all departments and laboratories of the Faculty of Science were completely destroyed. However, thanks to the efforts of the faculty's leadership, collaboration with the University's head, the Ministry of Higher Education, and financial support from the World Bank, the Biology department's building was rehabilitated, and some laboratories were partially renovated and made ready for experimental work. Nevertheless, these laboratories are not fully equipped with the necessary equipment, supplies, and materials. The faculty's head is currently making efforts to acquire the required equipment and supplies to ensure the laboratories are fully functional.
In 2014, based on a proposal from the Faculty of Natural Science, approval from the Division of Academic Affairs, and leadership of the Ministry Council, the Faculty of Biology was promoted to faculty level with the endorsement of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Since 2016, it has been operating as an independent faculty. Currently, the Faculty of Biology consists of two departments: Botany and Zoology. There are plans to establish a third department in the future. The duration of study to obtain a BSc in the Faculty of Biology is four years (eight semesters). The first two semesters cover basic university subjects, while the following semesters focus on the main and specific subjects of the field. The faculty's lecturer’s hold doctoral or master’s degrees and actively engages in teaching, research, curriculum development, and participation in various committees.
