Department of Soil Science and Irrigation

Introduction:

The field of soil science and irrigation was established in 1966 under the Plant Science Option in the Faculty of Agriculture at Kabul University. The name was changed to Soil Science and Irrigation in 1980. The department was merged with the Agronomy Department in 1994 due to the absence of academic staff. The Department of Soil Science and Irrigation, as an independent department, was re-established in 2013. Since 2013, the department has normally carried out its activities independently. The main goal of this department is to educate young people theoretically and practically in different fields of soil science and irrigation so that the graduates of this department with management and knowledge skills can be involved in improving the physical, chemical, and biological properties of agricultural soils. In addition, the graduates of this department will acquire technical knowledge about the efficient use of irrigation water and will be responsible for the management of soil and water resources. Appropriate use of contemporary technology in all aspects of soil science and irrigation is the priority of this department for higher and better-quality agricultural production. Using new irrigation systems, new and economic fertilization methods, and reducing the negative impacts of climate change on agricultural production by increasing the level of soil organic carbon to improve the biological properties of agricultural soils can be mentioned as examples of other goals of this department.

Vision:

The Department of Soil Science and Irrigation, as an academic institution, contributes to the development of professional knowledge at the national and regional levels through standard teaching, high-quality research, and other services related to the field.

Mission:

Currently, the Department of Soil Science and Irrigation is engaged in training young and professional staff in the fields of soil science and irrigation through teaching and research, which provide services for the development of agriculture in Afghanistan.

Objectives:

  • To teach the subjects of soil science and irrigation to undergraduate students to be prepared for the national and international level as a source of service to the people.

  • To use scientific knowledge, developments, innovations, and new ideas to improve crop production, and the quality of the environment and develop the viability of agricultural systems.

  • To provide services to the people by introducing timely production technology and training for the producers, consumers, policymakers, and nature protectors using proper and accurate professional knowledge in national and international languages.

Affiliations:

The department affiliations appear at the level of universities, especially at the level of agriculture faculties, and also with the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock in Afghanistan. No affiliations are currently available with foreign universities.

Laboratory and Equipment:

The department has an independent laboratory equipped with basic instruments. The mentioned tools are used to conduct the scientific research of undergraduate students.
