Horticulture Department

Introduction:

The Horticulture Department was established in 1975 as the Department of Forestry and Horticulture within the framework of the Agriculture Faculty of Kabul University. In 1979, it presented the first round of its graduates to society. The purpose of establishing this department was to improve capacity and development, mainly in two sectors, such as horticulture and forestry. Based on need and necessity, the Horticulture Department was separated from “Forestry and Horticulture Department” in 1994 and started to operate independently. The key objective of the establishment of the horticulture department is to train the next generation in the principles, techniques, and climate-smart strategies for the production and propagation of vegetables, fruits, and other horticultural crops. Moreover, research and teaching about ornamental plants, flowers, aromatics, plantations, and the design and establishment of modern and high-density orchards are also done. In order to get more practical skills and knowledge, students visit fruit demonstration orchards, national collections, vegetable research farms, nurseries, ornamental production centers, greenhouses, processing companies, postharvest handling centers, and storage facilities. In addition, students could be familiar with and experienced with new projects and also identify the existing challenges in the sector.

Vision:

The Department of Horticulture has the commitment to introduce scientific and professional faculty staff to society through the use of standard methods and techniques of teaching, research, and extension for the promotion and development of the horticulture sector, and accordingly to cooperate in the process of all-round economic and social development, considering the established principles.

Mission:

The Department of Horticulture has a mission to develop, introduce, and expand the science, art, skills, and technology of horticulture through teaching and capacity building of scientific and professional staff. In this way, by providing teaching, research, and extension services, the quantity and quality of horticulture products will be improved, leading to the development of trade, an increase in national income, and ensuring food security, so that they can play a significant role in the process of welfare and economic and social improvement of the society.

Objectives:

• Teaching different subjects of horticulture

• Improving the level of awareness, skills, and capacities of students in the horticulture sector

• Introducing modern technology and its use to students in the sector of horticulture

• Capacity building and training of young faculty staff in the horticulture sector

• Acquainting students with the implementation of various projects in the horticulture sector

• Development of the horticulture industry and fulfilling the needs of stakeholders

• Conducting research, scientific and technical studies, and publications in the horticulture sector

Contributions to other institutions:

Currently, there is no cooperation or contributions from the Department of Horticulture with other universities.

Laboratory, equipment, and facilities:

The department has an independent laboratory that is relatively equipped with basic tools. The facilities and devices are used for carrying out scientific investigations through students and faculty staff. Tables 1 and 2 below present the academic syllabus and staff details of the horticulture department, respectively.
