Department of the Islamic Art Program

Introduction

Islamic art has manifested itself throughout history in various forms and styles, from the decoration of holy sites and palaces to the adornment of houses and architectural structures. Kings and rulers of different civilizations have utilized Islamic art to demonstrate power and to preserve and sustain Islamic culture and artistic heritage for future generations. Therefore, it can be said that Islamic art has always been a magnificent and ever-present component of human life.

Moreover, Islamic art—beyond its influence on other aspects of life—plays a significant role in promoting unity, harmony, and the propagation of Islamic-religious art. To address these needs, the Department of Islamic Art was established in 1402 within the Faculty of Fine Arts of Kabul University.

In addition to several religious and university-wide subjects, this program includes specialized courses such as calligraphy, illumination, miniature painting, geometric patterns, stucco carving, and the history of Islamic art. Considering the importance and historical roots of Islamic art as one of the oldest artistic traditions in human life, we find abundant artistic traces of it across the world, especially in Afghanistan. Today, Islamic art also enjoys a special status in contemporary global art and is taught as a necessary discipline in major universities in both Islamic and non-Islamic countries.
