Department of Dari Language and Literature

Introduction

The Faculty of Languages and Literature of Kabul University was established in 1323 (1944). At the initial stage of the establishment of the Faculty of Languages and Literature, the Pashto and Dari languages were taught jointly within a single department. The first curriculum of the faculty included both languages. The first class of the faculty, consisting of ten graduates from Habibia High School and Ahmad Shah High School of Kandahar, was inaugurated on the first of Mizan, 1323 (1944).

In line with the development of the faculty, in 1335 (1956) the Departments of Dari Language and Literature and Pashto Language and Literature were separated. This separation was carried out in order to provide greater and better opportunities for specialized education and for the expansion and development of Dari and Pashto language and literature.

The Adab Scientific Journal is the official publication of this department and plays an important role in the dissemination and promotion of the Dari language and literature. It has been published regularly for several decades.

Currently, the Department of Dari Language and Literature offers three separate academic programs—Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral—through which it provides society with specialized and professional cadres such as lecturers, writers, researchers, and translators. Graduates serve in various governmental institutions, including radio, television, press, publishing houses, schools, and other organizations.
