Current Situation
The Faculty of Veterinary Science at Kabul University currently employs 27 academic staff members holding the ranks of Pohand/Professor (9), Pohandoy/Associate Professor (3), Pohanwal/Assistant Professor (2), Phanmal/Senior Teaching Assistant (6), and Pohanyar/Teaching Assistant (7). Regarding academic qualifications, 8 staff members hold PhD degrees, 10 hold Master’s degrees, and 8 hold Bachelor’s degrees. The Faculty of Veterinary Science comprises five undergraduate departments: the Preclinic department, Paraclinic department, Clinic department, the Food Technology and Hygiene, and the Animal Production and Management. In addition, the faculty is equipped with modern classrooms fitted with projectors, a library, and well-established teaching and research laboratories that support both theoretical and practical instruction. Furthermore, the Faculty of Veterinary Science at Kabul University operates an active teaching clinic located in the Darul-Aman area (Sanatorium Street). This clinic is utilized for clinical practical training of fourth- and fifth-year students and also provides veterinary treatment services to animals in the surrounding community.
The Faculty of Veterinary Sciences at Kabul University offers a Bachelor’s program (DVM), an active Master’s program (MVM), and an active Doctoral (PhD) program. In addition, two new Master’s programs within the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences are currently under development and are expected to commence soon, following the completion of the official procedure, God willing. To enhance the quality and effectiveness of teaching, administrative, and research activities, the faculty currently operates eight active committees. Each committee is structured with a chairperson, a secretary, and designated members.
The Faculty of Veterinary Science is equipped with laboratories for pathology (including histopathology and necropsy), microbiology, parasitology, toxicology, pharmacology, biochemistry, physiology, anatomy, food technology and hygiene, animal production and management, and animal nutrition. In addition, the faculty operates an incinerator for the safe disposal of animal carcasses. Most of the laboratories within the Faculty of Veterinary Science are actively used for teaching purposes. However, they require additional materials, particularly consumables such as diagnostic kits and reagents to effectively support research activities.
Admission to the Bachelor of Veterinary Science program is conducted through the national entrance examination (Kankor exam) as well as the specialized 14-pass examination for graduates of veterinary institutes across the country. Instruction is primarily delivered in the national languages of Afghanistan (Pashto and Dari). However, proficiency in English is considered an essential requirement, as most up-to-date academic resources, including textbooks and scientific articles, are available in this language.
