About the Faculty
The Faculty of Pharmacy was established in 1338 AH next to the Faculty of Medicine. Later, in 1342, it was separated from Medical Faculty as an independent faculty, but in 1343, while maintaining its scientific identity, it was again merged with the Medical Faculty. For the second time in early 1973 faculty of Pharmacy was separated from medical faculty and was established as an administrative unit of Kabul University, however its administrative affairs were still carried out through medical faculty. Later, in 1977, it got independent from the administrative affairs of the Faculty of Medicine, and took its place as one of the second unit within the framework of Kabul University.
Along with the development in field of medicine, the pharmaceutical profession has also grown in the light of contemporary science and technology and has become a multidimensional field in pharmaceutical services. In present era, pharmacist not only have serious responsibilities for the production, import, distribution, management and quality control of pharmaceuticals and foodstuffs in the country, but also as professionals in the field of pharmaceutical care, biology clinics, and the provision of better services and specialized medical examinations. Previously, students used to graduate faculty of Pharmacy in four years with a B-Pharm bachelor's degree.
In 1341 faculty of Pharmacy presented its first group of graduates to society and some of them were accepted as members of the faculty. In order to implement the above objectives Graduates of the Faculty of Pharmacy were employed in various technical, administrative and professional branches of the Ministries of Public Health, National Defense, Internal Affairs, Trade, Agriculture, Education, Counter Narcotics and related branches of municipalities, environmental departments and related private health sectors. Apart from teaching activities, this faculty has engaged in scientific collaborations with pharmaceutical faculties of partner countries such as the Faculty of Pharmacy of Lyon, France, Düsseldorf, Germany, the Faculty of Shahid Beheshti and Tehran, Iran, Kyoto and Tokyo Japan and other relevant authorities of the country. Scientific publications are one of the activities of this faculty.
Curriculum is a key element of education. A standardized curriculum should be in accordance with the needs of society that is one of the strategic goals of the Ministry of Higher Education and has always encouraged the country's higher education institutions to renew and develop their curricula. Thus, the Faculty of Pharmacy, after the establishment of new political regime in country (after the rule of the Taliban), revised and renewed the curriculum according to the potential needs of society and in accordance with international standards, on the basis of which the course of 4 Year was upgraded to 5 years, Pharm-D degree was granted for the graduates, internship was included in the tenth semester and students were graduated in two sections of pharmacy and clinical biology.
On the basis of fact that the academic curricula are in evolution in line with the new needs of the profession and society, Faculty of Pharmacy have also act in accordance with the new and potential needs of the pharmacy profession and society. For this reason the National Curriculum Committee of the Ministry of Higher Education developed a 6-step curriculum development strategy, based on which an educational requirement assessment (internal and external evaluation) has been carried out and on the basis of its findings, new educational goals are made for faculty of pharmacy. Attempts were made to make these goals clear and realistic. To achieve these goals, an educational strategy was developed, a new content of the program was designed, and new methods of teaching and learning (student-centered) were determined for effective education. E-learning included syllabus and the use of new technology in teaching was considered mandatory.
According to the new curriculum, students can enter the fields of industrial pharmacy, clinical pharmacy and clinical biology by choosing the desired topics in the semester.
Faculty of Pharmacy has a vision to improve the quality of education in accordance with standard requirements, standard teaching, favorable situations for research in pharmaceutical affairs, expansion of scientific research regarding the needs of the country and the region and playing an role in provision of pharmaceutical services.
• Develop the level of knowledge of pharmacy through teaching, research, practical work and internship.
• Development and improvement of pharmacy-related matters and playing a leading role in the production of pharmaceutical products, pharmaceutical administration and management, regulatory affairs of medicine, medical care, inpatient services, pharmaceutical care, pharmaceutical services for Community and play an effective role in the provision of health services.
• Present qualified pharmacists (with knowledge, skills, good conduct and professional abilities) to provide pharmaceutical services, solve problems caused due to medicines around the country,
• Improving public health through provision of standard medical services and regulation of pharmaceutical affairs.
