Brief history of Journalism Faculty

The faculty of Journalism in Kabul University was established as a department of the faculty of languages and literature in the year 1981. It remained as a department until the year 1980. In 1980, after it was separated from the faculty of languages and literature it then was transformed into a department of the faculty of social sciences. Since established as a faculty, it had 40 rounds of graduates and all the students who graduated from this faculty were professional journalists. Currently in 2012 this faculty has two departments: department of press, and department of radio and television. It is worth mentioning that students study the first and second years as general and they are then divided into two specific fields which are printed press, and radio and television. Graduated students can then work in different fields such as printed press, radio and television. Faculty of journalism has a library, an educational TV and radio lab, a computer lab, and a laboratory for photo journalism.

Strengths of the faculty:

  • This faculty has a very high number of applicants through Kankor Exam. It can be compared to medical sciences, engineering, economics and law faculties from this point of view.
  • Journalism generally is modern and is considered important by many governments and nationals around the globe.
  • This field is considered as the forth force alongside the judiciary, legislature, and executive laws.
  • Employment rate has an increase compared to other fields of study.
  • In addition to professional subjects, students of the faculty of journalism study other peripheral subjects such as fundamentals of law, economics, psychology, Dari, Pashto and English languages, political geography, contemporary history of Afghanistan, and Islamic studies.
  • As media been in a state of growth in the last ten years, most of the young people are encouraged to study journalism and establish good social connections.
  • Gender equality is considered carefully and female students are also enthusiastic to learn journalism and work in this field.
  • Graduates from this faculty can work on more than one media at the same time if they have the capacity to do so.
