Afghanistan has not faced to serious environmental problems also mega industrial and mining projects have not been implemented yet in Afghanistan which might cause environmental pollution. However, Afghanistan is affected by globally produced environmental problems. Therefore, environmental issues have not long history in Afghanistan. Students at Environment Science Faculty study core subjects as faculties’ curriculum and it is also updated. Aspect of global environmental issues has widened and it has moved to its dangerous stages. Global warming, increasing desertification, deforestation, rising of greenhouse gases, depletion of atmospheric ozone layer, melting Himalayan and polar ice caps, extinction of different animals and plants species, air and water pollution and a number of other problems are the main subjects of environmental issues today. Also using of natural resources are considered a critical issues which treats earth with scarcity of freshwater, reduction of arable land, consumption of fossil fuel and even threatens the oxygen availability.

Major impact of climate change and environmental degradation is the increase of unexpected geological and climatic disasters and hazards, such as landslides, frequent flooding, droughts, thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, spreading of epidemics like diseases and so on. Comparatively the disaster of earthquakes, tsunami, and wildfire has also accelerated much with increasing environmental issues.

Afghanistan is a defenseless state in response to environmental degradation, climatic and geological hazards and disasters. The major destructive aspect of environment degradation in Afghanistan is due to the three decades of war and lack of the rule of law. During the decades of war, natural resources of the country such as pasture lands, forests and wildlife deeply affected and destroyed. Surface water and groundwater was used irregularly also fast development of urbanization used most of the arable land.

Afghanistan has been affected by global and internal environmental problems which caused environmental pollution, biodiversity degradation and natural resource extinction. All these are due to lack of environment science knowledge, environmental research, natural resources management and lack public awareness regarding environmental protection, geological and environmental disaster risk reduction as well. Main causes of the environmental degradation, natural resources destruction and air pollution are humans. Humans are careless about natural resources that they are finite and environment is prone to degradation it need protection. People rather continue cutting root of the forest and use most destructive and unsympathetic way of hunting animal, bird and fishes.

Considering the above mentioned environmental issues in 2013 the Faculty of Environment Science was officially established which considered as basic and important need for the academia and society. Before establishing this faculty, there was a department of environmental protection and disaster management within the faculty of geoscience finally it upgrade to faculty of environment science.

During 2005 government of Afghanistan established National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA). NEPA has been working to establish and implement environmental protection policy, rule and regulations. Nevertheless, establishment of NEPA has not fill lack of expert and professionals. NEPA issued environmental rule and regulation and increase public awareness therefore, establishing of the environment science faculty was required.

Currently, there are ten professional and educated in different subjects of environment science who run the faculty and also there are contracted academic staffs from national and international organizations who actively take part in lectures. Now, the faculty of environment science is working on faculty developing plan and curriculum development. Faculty with support of some international organization is intended to update the curriculum with international standard and working to establish natural resources research center and master course program.
