By establishing of the new government and existence of UN in Afghanistan, this faculty started to work once more, and has been working hard to reconstruct the faculty. Finally the building of the faculty has reconstructed by the help of USDA/USAID.
At the moment, the building is equipped with all facilities including water supplies, electricity, new classes, and new chairs with the high quality and internet services, the teaching aid equipment including textbooks, tables, projectors, nice teaching stages and the curtains.
During this term, more than 15 young staff members have been sent to Japan, Jordan, USA, India and Kazakhstan for their MSc and PhD degrees. Four of them after completing their studies and receiving their PhDs from Japan, and five of them with the MSc degrees from Jordan, India and USA returned back to their homeland, and restarted their jobs at the faculty.
Some teachers have received some short-term bursaries for upgrading their knowledge and information, and have traveled to different countries. Foreign professors have helped this faculty by short-terms visits at clinical subjects, and also they have created a small farm of sheep production for faculties of Veterinary Sciences and Agriculture. In the future, laboratory of Virology of the faculty will be refurnished by the help of project of World Bank that is supporting Kabul University, and other projects are taken for reconstruction of laboratories of the faculty.
Currently the total number of academic staff members of this faculty is 36, 34 of which are male and only four are women. At the moment, 13 academic members have gone for their PhD programs, 8 for their MSc degree. The remaining are in DVM level and we are trying to find opportunity to send them for their MSc studies.
Freshman students can be admitted to this faculty after successfully passing the entrance examination which is organized by the Ministry of Higher Education of Afghanistan. The instructional language for this faculty is almost Dari, and this faculty has 10 semesters. There is also a program for freshman to this faculty to familiarize them with the faculty and the university.
The freshman courses are mainly consisted of basic subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English language, and some other subjects which are being taught by teachers of other faculties of Kabul University.
Professional courses such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Veterinary Ecology, animal genetics and biometry, and Histology begin in 2nd year. In 3rd year, some other subjects are being taught including, Animal nutrition, Virology, Animal Hygiene, Animal breeding and etc. Clinical courses begin in the 4th year, and continue till end of 5th year. Students of 4th year have to study the courses such as Epidemiology, poultry diseases, Pharmacology, Clinical diagnosis, Veterinary internal medicine, and subjects including research methods, writing monograph as graduation project. These subjects are being taught besides some other subjects till the end of the semesters. At the end of the 10th semester, students have their monograph prepared, and presented in front of the Jury delegations, instructors, students and some other professionals at KU and defense their monographs to receive their diploma of doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) which is equal to (BSc).
It should be mentioned that curriculum of this faculty has been revised and hopefully we will apply it from first class this year.
The total numbers of students at faculty of Veterinary Science are 296 that 268 of them are boys and 38 are girls. This faculty has graduated its first term of graduation in 1357.
This faculty has instructed 884 youth doctors of veterinary, that 97 of them were females.
It is worth mentioning that some of veterinarians who were graduated from this faculty are working as clinicians in some developed countries of the world.
Organizations where our graduates can work are: Ministry of Agriculture, Municipalities, Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Commerce, academic Institutions of Veterinary, and Private Sectors.
The faculty administrative section is consisted of deanship, vice dean office, 5 departments, and academic management office. In academic management office, manger, two staff members, one librarian, IT person and some watchmen and workers are working.
