Architectural Department:

Although from thousands of years ago  Afghanistan has its local architecture and engineering methods, but for the first time, formal education in engineering faculty in modern country-style started with establishment of architectural  department in Engineering faculty at Kabul University in 1346 with a five-year training program.  Unlike other engineering fields, engineering students interested in architectural department they will be introduced to this department after the first year study. Two years later, in 1348, some changes occurred in the curriculum and finally students of this field will be enrolled in this department after finishing the first year and passing the exam successfully.

Until the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1358, the architectural department of  Engineering Faculty of the university was one of the most reputable academic institutions in engineering in the region.

from 1360 onwards Engineering faculty of Kabul University was less attractive to rulers of the time, and less resources were allocated to.  This trend continued until 1364 after last period  graduation of engineering faculty  students,  gate  of engineering department was completely closed.

Engineering faculty of Kabul University in 1368 started up again and students were enrolled in faculty.

But before the first graduation of students, the Mujahideen forces captured Kabul in 1371. Which were followed by wars that cause the Kabul University to remain closed for several years in 1374 . Kabul University that were left among the ruins from the war,  started to work again with a small number of sources and very little teachers.  But back in 1375 the city was attacked by the Taliban and was soon occupied by them, and again the university gates become closed.

In beginning of 1376, the Taliban government agreed that universities can begin to work again, but under certain conditions that they wanted, that it’s main case is deprivation of girls from high education. In this period the architectural department was in the worst possible state. From the problems of that time we can mention to:  The number of teachers was reduced to only one, the classes were taken with Non-availability of textbooks, lectures, laboratories, suitable space for studio and voluntary support without asking any engineers.  With the falling down of the Taliban government in 1380, efforts for  establishing new government and reviving the lost values ​​in all fields began. Architectural department of Engineering faculty hired new teachers and teaching situation became better in this department.

In 1385 an agreement was signed between the Kansas university of United States and Engineering faculty of Kabul University with funding from the World Bank. The aim of signing the contract was The to strengthen the scientific, technical, administrative parts of engineering faculty of Kabul University. Based on that agreement, Architectural Department of Engineering Faculty is also linked with the Architectural Faculty of  Kansas State University.

In addition to equipped library and other parts of the engineering faculty of Kabul University, a number of professors from each department went to complete their Masters degree in Kansas University. Three professors from the architectural department were also included in this collection . In the spring of 1390, our professors successfully completed the Master degree courses. After completing their masters, they started teaching in architectural department of Engineering faculty. One professor of this department got Fulbright Scholarship and finished his master program in Kansas university.

The curriculum of this department became renewed with Kansas University in 1386 and it’s implementation started in 1387. Although the three other departments in the faculty of engineering change their curricula, course duration reduced to 4 years.

But instead architectural department needed some new subjects and eliminated some unnecessary subjects in their curriculum, training course is retained for a period of 5 years.

Currently architectural department of Engineering faculty has 12 official teachers that contains 1 doctor, 5 masters, 3 in progress of doing master and 3 having license (finished faculty). As well  4 teacher voluntary  help department in teaching , from them one is doctor and 3 are license.

Department has four studio that 3 of them are used as  classrooms, and one of them is for practical work.  So architectural department needs 2 other classrooms, in order to don’t  use their studio instead of classrooms . it is mentionable that curriculum of   architectural department in addition to important subjects of this department it also includes professional and non-professional subjects as well.

  • professional subjects are subjects that will be held in the engineering faculty. Code of each subject  is determined  regarding to the type of subject. Selection of professional subjects can include the following subjects:
    • AR-533 professional  practice
    • AR-531 construction Estimation

 

  • Non-professional subjects are subjects that will be held out of the engineering faculty. Non-professional subjects can include the following subjects:
    • Urban Geography
    • Calligraphy
    • City planning and design

Student in the architectural department  get 179 credits  in the following categories.

  • 61% Specialized subjects
  • 28% basic subjects
  • 11% University included subjects
