Conducting Scientific Conference on Prevention of the Air Pollution, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Independence of the Country

The National Environmental Protection Agency and the Ministry of Higher Education, in coordination with Kabul University, held a scientific conference on preventing air pollution on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the independence of the country on the 15th of June 2019 in the central hall of the Kabul University.

At this scientific conference, Diploma Engineer Abdul Tawab Balakarzai Academic Deputy and Minister of the Ministry of Higher Education, Professor Hamidullah Farooqi Chancellor of Kabul University and Advisor of Chief Minister in Higher Education Affairs of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Mr. Abdul Wahid Qatali, President of the General Directorate for Presidential Affairs, Mr. Shah Zaman Maiwandi General Director of the National Environmental Protection Agency, Mohammad Yousif Pashtoon, Senior Advisor to the Presidential Affairs, some of the nominees and heads of relevant departments, professors, staff and students of Kabul University were participated.

At the beginning, Diploma Engineer Abdul Tawab Balakarzai Academic Deputy and Minister of the Ministry of Higher Education on behave of the Ministry of Higher Education, welcomed the conference participants, and while talking about the causes of environmental pollution, he mentioned that it is one of the serious threats to humankind and the community. Mr. Balakarzai also referred to carbon monoxide and the total amount of harmful chemicals that have more harmful effects on air pollution and environmental problems. The identification of the sources of these contaminants for the survival of human beings has taken on serious needs and it is needed to be given priority to the environmental protection.

The Minister of the Ministry of Higher Education said the cause and sources of air pollution in the country is because of using old and worn out vehicles and other non-quality fuel and materials; he said that to address such challenges can be through scientific institutions and related departments; action and awareness and educational programs. Subsequently, Mr. Balakarzai announced the cooperation of the institutes and scientific institutions of the country in the fight against environmental challenges by conducting scientific research and conducting educational programs, it is possible to implement effective programs to reduce air pollution and share the results with society and government.

However, he spoke on the importance of conducting scientific conferences in order to eliminate and reduce air pollution and he promised that as a academic affairs representative they will work with governmental officials; and people to prevent the increase of air pollution and health problems, social and economic harm in the community.

At this meeting, Professor Hamidullah Farooqi Chancellor of Kabul University and Advisor of Chief Minister in Higher Education Affairs of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, also welcomed the guests and the participants of the conference, he identified  the pollution of the environment from the vital and valuable issues that, if the on time action is not taken by the cooperation of the  government, people and the scientific institutions, it is not possible to prevent its effect and damage in the social, economic, health and political disasters; then  in the future it would be impossible or too late.

According to Mr. Farooqi, air pollution and environmental pollution have a close relationship with global warming, greenhouse gas emissions, changes in rainfall and climate change and droughts, and the occurrence of environmental problems, diseases and conflicts among governments. He addressed the role of the academic and scientific community and scientific institutions and related departments to take action in the field of reducing environmental pollution and education of the young generation, identifying the environment and air pollution, studying the effects of the pollution on the social, economic, health and political life of the people and society. He emphasized to improve the environmental conditions and solve the problems of air pollution by using relevant departments and people in the community.

Consequently, Mr. Farooqi thanked the Ministry of Higher Education and the National Environmental Protection Agency for organizing this scientific conference and called for scientific conferences to solve the existing air pollution problems in the future.

Meanwhile, Mr. Shah Zaman Maiwandi, General Director of the National Environmental Protection Agency, pointed out how the conference was held, the conference highlighted the leadership of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the independence of Afghanistan in the framework of the activities of the departments of the government; that has been set up to reduce pollution and fight against environmental pollution.

On the other hand, Mr. Abdul Wahid Qatali, President of the General Directorate for Presidential Affairs, Mr. Engineer Ezatollah Sediqi, Deputy Minister of Environment of the National Environmental Protection Agency, and Dr. Ahmad Sayeer Mahjur Deputy of Finance and Administrative affairs of MoHE, have spoken about the environmental factors in the country. The excessive population density, the abundance of vehicles, the use of coal, the use of workshops on repairing vehicles and non-quality fuel, coal, plastic, etc., have been considered as factors that increase air pollution in Kabul and our country.

Subsequently, several professors and experts in the field of environment and geology attended the panel, providing their articles and information on the relationship between freedom and the healthy environment, responding to the questions posed by the participants. Panel members and participants also presented specific suggestions to the conference officials and organizers to address the environmental problem, in order to solve a part of community and pollution problem.

It should be noted that the current conference on the leadership of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan on the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the independence of Afghanistan in the framework of the activities of government departments has been implemented. Therefore, the National Environmental Protection Agency, in coordination with Kabul University and the Ministry of Higher Education, on the occasion of this magnificent day, as well as the eve of the Environment Week, organized this scientific program entitled "Independence of our Dignity, Clean Air our health".

At the end, appreciation letters from the National Environmental Protection Agency were distributed by the leadership of the Ministry of Higher Education, the leadership of the University of Kabul and the leadership of the National Environmental Protection Agency for those who were enrolled in contributing to this program.
